Heterogeneous materials such as fiber composites are made from at least two constituents which behave different under thermo-mechanical loading. Modeling the materials separately at the scale of components or structures is extremely expensive from a computational point of view. Therefore the combined mechanical behavior of the composite is determined using homogenization methods with which efficient virtual tests can be performed.
At ALE we developed various codes to compute the homogenized properties (strength, stiffness) of composite materials. An advanced analytical homogenization scheme is implemented in FE-code Abaqus as a GUI toolbox. The analytical results show excellent agreement with detailed finite element analyses.
